One of the things I researched before we left Marquette was Bar-B-Q places in the South. I came across a website that listed the top 100 Bar-B-Q houses in South Carolina put out by The South Carolina Barbeque Association. This association has been collecting reviews of barbeque restaurants (and "joints") around the state for over four years. Their judges are actually trained to become Certified Judge, Senior Judge then Master Judge. To me, that has to be one of the top 100 jobs in South Carolina!
How fortunate for us that two of the top 100 were here in Charleston! The two here in Charleston were listed under 100 Mile Barbeque- I'd drive 100 miles to eat this barbeque.
Although one of the places was less than a mile from our hotel, it was closed due to a water main breaking. However, the other one was just three miles from us, Melvin's. Yum, yum, yum. We ate there a few times and even bought some barbeque sauce to take home. They are also famous for their onion rings. Or I should say onion ring since they are sold singly. They are the size of a large donut and the coating is similar to a hush puppy. As my sister MaryAnn would say, they are 'To Die For'!!
